Restoration of the Bell Tower San Marco Church
Role
Senior Architect
Date
2011
Location
Rossana, Italy
The bell tower, characterized by Romanesque brick friezes over a stone structure, was originally restored with the addition of two Gothic openings and later raised in the 17th century with the current bell chamber. Positioned prominently on the west side of the church, the tower faces the square and is bordered by a staircase running its full length. It features a pavilion roof with irregular stone slabs and facades divided into five bays by raised brick pilasters.
The southern façade overlooks the street and provides access to the church via a stone staircase. The tower is marked by a bricked-up clock and a walled window showing signs of deterioration due to mortar erosion.
The intervention includes the removal of deteriorated plaster, masonry repair, and restoration of original openings. All four façades will undergo complete plaster removal and restoration; deteriorated stone bands will be rebuilt, and brick cornices and moldings near the roofline will be carefully restored.
Given the poor condition of the stone roof, the project also includes the complete reconstruction of the wooden roof structure and new stone covering.
In collaboration with Arch. Bachiorrini
