Restoration San Matteo Chapel
Role
Senior Architect
Date
2011
Location
Rossana, Italy
The intervention focuses on the urgent restoration of the roof of the Chapel of San Marco in Lemma, with particular attention to the deteriorated wooden trusses, which are increasingly affected by water infiltration, posing a threat to the valuable interior decorative elements.
The existing roof structure consists of aged wooden trusses, partially reinforced over time with metal bands, tie rods, or steel chains added to share the structural load due to damaged elements. The actual condition of each truss will be assessed on site once the roof is opened, in order to determine whether consolidation or full replacement is required.
To comply with current seismic regulations and enhance the overall structural stability—given the presence of minor cracks in the dome’s intrados and along the right-side wall—a new structural curb in reinforced concrete or laminated wood will be installed along the perimeter walls. This curb will be recessed within the wall thickness and remain invisible from the exterior, thereby preserving the historical integrity of the chapel's appearance.
